BACK AWAY FROM THE SINK: THE RIGHT WAY TO WASH YOUR FACE

February 09, 2017

Making sure that things are clean is what we are supposed to do, right? You want it to be spic and span unless you're talking about your skin. Washing your face everyday is a necessary step in any skin care routine, however there is such a thing as too clean. To find out if it’s possible to over-wash your face—and to learn how to wash your face the right way—we went to our resident Skin Care Expert CJ Hood.

CAN YOU OVER-WASH YOUR FACE?

The most important question is: can you actually over-wash your face? “No question,” Hood says, “when you over-cleanse your skin, you dry it out.” This drying out occurs because excessive washing can strip skin of its natural oils—the sebum that helps to lubricate and hydrate our skin.

To wash your face the right way, try to keep your trips to the sink to no more than twice a day, depending on your skin type. “Once a day is necessary,” Hood explains, especially at night when it’s important to remove makeup and any other impurities that may have built up on your skin’s surface throughout the day. “But, if you have oily skin, a twice a day cleanse may be required,” she says.

When you over-cleanse your skin, you dry it out.

Hood suggests always having a thoughtful plan with your skin care to avoid over-drying your skin. The first step in this post-cleansing thoughtful plan? Hydration. “You have to moisturize after you cleanse,” she says—this goes for oily skin types, too. During the day select a moisturizer that has a built-in SPF to help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays while you keep it hydrated. At night, after you remove your makeup and cleanse, she suggests following up with a moisturizer that has some “goodies” in it—read: ingredients to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles or ones that can help give your complexion a brightening boost.

OTHER TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CLEANSING

1. Use gentle formulas that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils and gentle massaging movements to avoid irritation.

2. Avoid using water that’s too hot which can dry out your skin.

3. When it’s time to dry, use a soft towel to pat your face instead of rubbing, which can be aggressive.

4. Remember, skin care isn’t one-size fits all. Hood notes that while most of us should keep our cleansing to a once-a-day affair—twice a day as long as you’re properly moisturizing—there are others whose skin can handle a more frequent relationship with their face wash. “Every skin is different,” she says, “so you have to find your own set point.”
