6 Habits That Are Giving You Wrinkles

Let's face it, we are all getting older. Wrinkles are a part of the process. However, did you know that parts of your everyday routine could be making wrinkles show up before they should or make them worse? Dr. Tunisia Cornelius gives us a list of the worst "wrinkle offenders".

1. Drinking

"Alcohol dehydrates the skin and if skin lacks hydration for a long period of time it will lose it's elasticity and that is when wrinkles form" explained board certified and ATL Derm Skin Care Expert, Dr. Tunisia Cornelius. When skin is unable to produce collagen your skin begins to look loose. Collagen and Vitamin A produce new cells and that is what keeps skin looking fresh and tight.

Smoking is just plain bad for you all the way around. It is usually the cause of most of the wrinkles that happen prematurely. "Smoking is just so detrimental to the body. Smoking can accelerate the skin ageing process in the skin. It can even appear orange or grey" said Dr. Cornelius.

3. Chewing Gum

Gum chewing can help create wrinkles in the lower mouth or make marionette lines get worse. So next time you might want to reach for a mint instead.

4. Leaving Makeup On

"Skin needs to breathe, make up, the environment, all have pollutants that are causing collagen and elastin to break down leaving your skin fair game for wrinkles, lines and spots." warned Dr. Cornelius Dark make up especially can leave a pigment, such as mascara and eye liner. When left on, your open pores collect the make up and it damages the skin.

5. Picking

Watching zits and blemishes get removed has become all the rage on social media however Dr. Cornelius warns about the results if you are "picking". "If blemishes are not removed properly or on their own you can risk infection or worse, scarring" stated Dr. Cornelius, who added " Every time you are picking, pulling or pinching you are creating trauma and that can lead to irritating or damaging your skin".

6. No Sunscreen

You need to wear sunscreen if you are going out in the sun. Everyday. Every time. The sun damages skin and when exposed to UV radiation it can change skin cells which can lead to cancer. The sun also accelerates the ageing process, making it look dry and present with age spots. "Sunscreen should be a habit, and a good SPF 30 needs to be applied often to every area that can be exposed to the sun's harmful rays" was Dr. Cornelius' advice.
