Natural isn't always best. Why you might really be breaking out.

Dermatologists are seeing an increase in allergies caused by natural or organic skincare products. Botanical skincare products that contain lavender, jasmine and similar ingredients are causing consumers to develop "contact dermatitis." Natural oils, such as ylang-ylang and tea tree oil, which are often sought after in products can spark a reaction in some people.

Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when the skin develops an allergic reaction after being exposed to a foreign substance. This causes the body to release inflammatory chemicals that can make the skin feel itchy and irritated. If it's an allergy, your immune system is involved. After you touch something, it mistakenly thinks your body is under attack. It springs into action, making antibodies to fight the invader. A chain of events causes a release of chemicals, including histamine. That's what causes the allergic reaction- in this case, an itchy rash. Now you have an allergic contact dermatitis.

Dr. Cooper and Dr. Cornelius recommend that you test skin products before applying them to more sensitive areas such as the face.

How to test for possible allergic reactions:

The side of the neck is a good starting point for true compatibility because it’s thinner and generally more reactive. The idea is that if it can be tolerated on your neck, then you can feel confident that it will be okay on the face. Also, should you encounter a negative reaction such as an itchy, red rash, you might want it to appear on the neck rather than on your face.

Patients often assume that organic or plant-derived products are safe and healthier for your skin than their counterparts. This can create a further problem when these products are used to treat an existing problem and they make it worse. It can be the equivalent of treating a rash with a rash.
